The film "One of the Thousand Hills," screened at the Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD)
On the evening of April 18th, 2024, the Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD) hosted a captivating event. Among the distinguished attendees were ILPD staff, students, alumni, local authorities, youth and women representatives, school head teachers, neighbors, and various stakeholders. The occasion centered on the screening of "One of the Thousand Hills," a cinematic masterpiece depicting Rwanda's profound journey towards reconciliation and renewal by a Belgian filmmaker, Mr Bernard Bellefroid.
This marked the second screening of the film in Rwanda. The movie tells the stories of three children—Fidéline, Olivier, and Fiacre—from Mushirarungu Hill in Nyanza District, who tragically perished in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. This film is their story, the story of three children in the name of all the others, the story of a hill in the name of all the hills. Also, it narrates the compelling journey of unity and reconciliation within the survivors and genocidaires.
Bellefroid stated that following the success of his acclaimed film "Rwanda: The Hills Speak Out," which delved into the Gacaca courts, he was inspired to create another film demonstrating how genocide survivors could achieve reconciliation with genocidaires.
He stated that he believed making that film primarily focuses on humanity and the responsibility to accurately portray the history of the genocide against the Tutsi and how the Rwandan society has continued to rebuild itself since then.
He said, "I feel that it is my duty to showcase what happened during the genocide against the Tutsi. There is no other reason I undertook the making of this film other than it being a responsibility."
Due to its portrayal in various countries, Bellefroid demonstrates that the film can serve as a powerful tool for challenging denial and confronting the perpetrators and those with genocide ideology.
The film is being screened as Rwanda marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi, demonstrating to the international community and those who deny the genocide that Rwanda is making strides in rebuilding all sectors, including justice, unity, and reconciliation.
The film will be screened in other various part of the country to reach out to the students from the University of Rwanda, the Catholic University of Rwanda, in the village of Nyamiyaga and Mushirarungu in Nyanza, Mundi Center, and in the Bugesera District, particularly in the cell of Mbyo.
