Students pursuing Diploma in Legal Practice visit Nyanza Correctional Facility
62 full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (DLP) students undertook a significant excursion on May 14th, 2024, to the Nyanza Correctional Facility situated on Mpanga Hill, Mukingo Sector, Nyanza District, Southern Province. This visit marked a crucial aspect of their training, designed to bridge the theoretical concepts of legal practice with real-world application. The primary focus was to enhance their comprehension of court judgment enforcement, with a particular emphasis on criminal sentencing.
Nyanza Correctional Facility serves as a beacon of Rwanda's progressive approach to inmate rehabilitation. During their visit, the students were immersed in the facility's ethos, witnessing firsthand the transition from punitive measures to a rehabilitative focus. This paradigm shift underscores Rwanda's commitment to holistic inmate care, emphasizing education, practical skill development, counseling, spiritual guidance, and partnership initiatives such as the Prison Fellowship International program.

The students traversed the corridors of Nyanza Correctional Facility, gaining insights into its diverse inmate population. Notably, the facility accommodates convicts from various jurisdictions, including Rwanda, as well as those extradited from international courts such as the United Nations Special Court for Sierra Leone. Wings dedicated to Rwandan genocide perpetrators and individuals convicted of crimes against humanity underscored the facility's role in administering justice on both a national and international scale.
