Partners in Education Turn to Sport to Strengthen Ties
Teachers from Mushirarungu Primary School and staff of the Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD) faced off in a friendly volleyball match played in the rain on Friday, 23rd October 2026, at ILPD headquarters in Nyanza.
The match was organized to foster social interaction and bonding between the staff of both institutions, which already work together under a partnership to promote education at the primary school. Following this initial encounter, the two sides are set to meet again soon for a second leg to be hosted at Mushirarungu Primary School.
Heavy rain delayed the start of play. When the downpour eased to a drizzle, the two sides chose to go ahead rather than call it off, playing on through the raindrops.
The game was lighthearted and unconventional. Players did not follow standard competition rules regarding rotation or the number of sets, and the mood was one of fun and camaraderie rather than rivalry.
Richard Mugisha, the Academic Registrar at ILPD, said the match was meant to extend the relationship between the two institutions beyond the classroom.
“This match you see here is a friendly match that we organized between the staff of ILPD and the teachers of Mushirarungu Primary School. ILPD and Mushirarungu PS already have an existing partnership to promote education at that primary school,” Mugisha said.
“Today, we wanted to go beyond education and also foster social interaction and bonding between the staff of both institutions,” he added.
Adrien Rutagarama, the Headteacher of Mushirarungu Primary School, expressed his delight with the event and looked forward to hosting the return match on their home ground soon.
“We are very pleased that today we held this match between Mushirarungu Primary School and the ILPD. It is a wonderful match aimed at strengthening the relationship between ILPD and Mushirarungu Primary School, bringing together educators to reinforce collaboration and support one another in advancing education,” Rutagarama said.
ILPD’s partnership with Mushirarungu Primary School has so far seen the institute supply the school with 414 books covering subjects tested in national examinations. It has also provided teaching and learning materials for various subjects, as well as sports equipment, including balls and other items.
