Legal Practice: A Weapon to Fight Against Injustice
On Sunday, January 26, 2025, Dr. Aime Muyoboke Karimunda, the Rector of the Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD), delivered a public lecture on the "Perspectives of Legal Education in Rwanda and Today’s World" to law students enrolled in the weekend program at UNILAK Rwamagana Campus. Dr. Karimunda emphasized the critical need for future lawyers to acquire practical legal skills to excel in their professional careers.
“You must know that you are soldiers who must fight against injustice. Therefore, you need to incorporate legal practice into everything you do,” Dr. Karimunda stated passionately. “If only lawyers, judges, prosecutors, and all judicial officials delivered justice as they should, there would be no injustice in the country.” H
Dr. Karimunda urged students to join the legal profession promptly upon completing their bachelor’s degrees, addressing a concerning trend where law graduates often venture into unrelated fields.
“It has been observed that some law graduates end up working at gas stations or becoming teachers. You are encouraged to promptly pursue your profession, which would help address the shortage of judges and other personnel in the justice sector,” he added.
Dr. Karimunda also highlighted the importance of the Diploma in Legal Practice (DLP) program as the essential pathway for aspiring legal professionals to realize their dreams. He assured students that ILPD is committed to supporting their professional aspirations. He pledged that if enough students from Rwamagana expressed interest, ILPD would establish a campus there to accommodate them.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of his peers, Jean Nepomcene Tuyikunde, a student at UNILAK Rwamagana, shared key lessons from the lecture.
“We learned that as lawyers, we must strive to deliver justice to every citizen and foreigner in a timely manner, contributing to the development of our country. We should also offer exceptional customer care to those who seek our services. By helping people prosper, we too grow, and so does our nation,” he said.
This lecture is part of an ongoing initiative by ILPD to engage law students across Rwanda and beyond, inspiring them to embrace the profession and uphold justice.
