Lancaster University Law Students from the Republic of Ghana Visit ILPD
This topic took center stage during their study visit to the Institute of Legal Practice and Development on February 27, 2024.
Law students from Lancaster University expressed their excitement in discovering Rwanda and the Institute of Legal Practice and Development. These students who were led by their Professor, Ms Agatha Rockson, Esq said what they learn in Rwanda is beyond their expectation.
Michelle Smart Abbey said, "I have seen a lot of development in Rwanda, especially in infrastructure and many other aspects, exceeding my expectations. Because of these reasons, I have decided to pursue further studies in ILPD in the near future."
Her friend Jacob Sarbah also expressed his admiration for Rwanda, saying, "We came here to learn about the Genocide against the Tutsi, and it has really opened our eyes. I have learned a lot." "Visiting ILPD has inspired me to continue my legal studies, even after graduating from our university in Ghana." He added.
The head of delegation, Prof Agatha Rockson Esq, expressed that their journey was aimed at learning how the country known for its remarkable recovery after the Genocide against the Tutsi has progressed.
She said, "The reason we came to Rwanda is to learn how you managed to rebuild after the Genocide against the Tutsi, to teach us how to continue living. We wanted to see how the country managed to move forward after those dark times."
She continued, "We wanted to see how you have implemented various laws and how you have found solutions that emerged from your culture like Gacaca, Abunzi, and how you have overcome economic challenges."
During their visit, the delegation was briefed by the management of ILPD on the institute's history and operations, the transition from civil to common law, and ILPD's role in advancing the rule of law in Rwanda and beyond. Following the discussions, they were given a tour of the institute's various amenities, including classrooms, lodging, computer laboratories, and recreational facilities.
So far, ILPD has received trainees from 18 various African countries namely Ghana, Cameroon, South Sudan, Nigeria, Gambia, Zambia, Malawi, Chad, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Chad, Togo, Nigeria, recently Gabon as well as Rwanda.
