ILPD Students Visits Nyanza Prison (MPANGA)

Wednesday 26th March, 68 DLP students of ILPD paid a courtesy call to Nyanza Prison known as Mpanga Prison. The aim of this visit was to help students put their theoretical skills in the scene where they had to here and analyze some cases and have an opportunity of asking questions to the Director of the Prison. Mpanga International Prison in Nyanza District is home to over six thousand prisoners, many of them Genocide convicts. Also, among the detainees at this facility are eight Sierra-Leonean inmates who were convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity by the UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone. One of the innovation that inspired students during the visit is the new system called Prison Watch. This system help the prison’s management to know when an inmate entered in and when is he/she supposed to be released. This will reduce cases of inmates who used to stay in prison long extra period as confirmed by the Director of Nyanza Prison. Nyanza Prison (MPANGA) has been in operation since 2007. The prison help inmates to be productive even inside the prison by participating in different activities. Inmates get 70% of the income of their activities when it’s a small activity and 10% when it’s a big activity. The Prison facilitates also the social activities like, Church services, playing games and dancing troop.
