ILPD starts DLP weekend program
On Saturday 8th November 2014,The Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD) launched a new way of delivering the Diploma in Legal Practice; Weekend Program.
Opening this program, Me Athanase Rutabingwa the Attorney of Rwanda Bar Association confirmed that this program helps advocates to become more professionals training them how to practice what they learnt as theories in law schools at University. “ILPD teach how to behave in courts as advocates, how to listen to customers, and how to work with any one also in the career” he said.
Dr Kalinda François Xavier is an advocate and a Lecturer at University of Rwanda as one of the students of this program, he consider the program as a key element to strengthen the capacity of a lawyer. “we need this training because it is very deferent from what we had in faculties of law, as here we meet experienced lawyers and share our experience. It is more than just reading notes and have marks” said Dr Kalinda.
The Acting Rector of ILPD Aimable HAVUGIYAREMYE requested the students to behave as students and promised them that the Institute is determined to do anything which is in its capacity to make the program productive. He encouraged them to exploit the library of the Institute as it is one of the best law libraries in the country.
Me Rutabingwa said the training is important to all those who are planning to become professional lawyers.he reminded them that one three years were given those who are practicing in law firm to have this diploma and two years are remaining. According to him, the Diploma in legal practice will allow Rwandan lawyers to compete on the regional labor market.
This program will take 9 months and courses are thought on Saturdays and Sundays. The first intake of the weekend program at ILPD has 44 students and all of them are in the specification of Advocates. The program has 9 modules and each module is accompanied by research exercise.
