ILPD starts a Part Time Program in Kigali
On 10th February 2014, the president of Rwanda Bar Association Me RUTABINGWA Athanase officiated an opening of the Part time Program of the Diploma in Legal Practice in Kigali. The opening ceremony took place at MINIJUST at Supreme Court where courses immediately started to be conducted. The Part time program starts with 50 students from within Rwanda as well as in the region. Courses will be scheduled in the evenings from Monday to Friday. Officiating the opening Me RUTABINGWA recognized efforts of everyone who participated in the process of getting this branch of ILPD opened in Kigali which will facilitate students who are not able to stay in Nyanza for six months. “There is a long time we had this as a dream to see ILPD in Kigali so that students who are working around can study without leaving their job.” He said
The Diploma in Legal Practice take a period of nine moths including three months of internship and its cost is one million Rwandan francs. During the press conference that preceded the official opening, journalists pointed that costs to be high but according to the Rector of ILPD Professor NICK Johnson, the cost is in accordance with other EAC Legal Practice Institution and “it is not a high cost when we consider the outcome of this program.” He said
The Diploma in Legal Practice has become compulsory in Rwanda whereby after three coming years Lawyers, Judges and Prosecutors will not be allowed to work without this Diploma that can be obtained within less than one year! After eight years of existence of ILPD hundreds of lawyers, Judges and Prosecutors have been awarded the Diploma in Legal Practice.
