ILPD conducts a Training on Human rights of people in detention for RCS Staff
The Rwandan Prison system currently house over 50.000 people. The Rwanda Correctional Services has the responsibility to hold these individuals in accordance with established international and national standards on the treatment of people in detention. Therefore, Prison officials are at the forefront of detainees’ human rights protection on a daily basis, experiencing them and putting them into practice; respecting them and enforcing their respect.
It is in this regard that ILPD is conducting a two phase training of RCS staff with 40 participants for each phase. The first phase started on Sunday 16th to Wednesday 20th August 2015. And the second one started on Sunday 23rd to Wednesday 26th August 2015. Some of the subjects to be covered by the training include: Human Rights Protection Mechanisms, detention: ensuring basic needs and proper living conditions, Human rights and Prisoners file management, etc.
The overall objective of this training is to provide a practical understanding of established human rights standards for the Rwandan prison system. While closing the first phase of this training, trainees recognised the role that the training will play in their daily work and thank ILPD and RCS management for having provided this training.
