ILPD Community Urged to Become Teachers of Heroic Values
Prof. Chrysologue Karangwa has encouraged the staff and students of the Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD) to strive to exemplify the values of humanity demonstrated by Rwanda’s Heroes, so that others can learn from them.
He made these remarks on March 14, 2025, during a talk delivered to students, leaders, and staff of ILPD, focusing on the legacy of Rwanda’s Heroes.
Prof. Karangwa reflected on the heroic culture that defined Rwanda’s forefathers, who built the nation, as well as more recent heroes who liberated Rwanda from colonialism and ended the divisions that led to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
He cited the example of Gen. Maj. Gisa Fred Rwigema, who refused to let Rwandans remain, exiled and dedicated his life to liberating Rwanda, ultimately sacrificing his life in the process. Prof. Karangwa emphasized that true heroism sometimes requires selflessness and a commitment to the greater good.
He shared his own experiences, saying: “When I returned from Belgium after earning my PhD, I went to Zaire [now the Democratic Republic of the Congo] for a well-paying job. But despite everything, we were always called ‘those Rwandans,’ constantly having to justify ourselves just to live.”
Prof. Karangwa urged the audience to appreciate the favorable conditions they have today and to promote unity and uphold the values that characterized Rwanda’s Heroes.
“For those of you in the justice sector, your heroism is to excel in what you are learning. The country needs you to be exemplary teachers through your conduct. If you indulge in corruption or greed for money, you will become cowards,” he added.
Participants of the talk appreciated the lessons they drew from it. One of the students, Thierry Niyomugabo, expressed his gratitude for the discussion, stating that he and his colleagues would adhere to the valuable advice they received.
Dr. Aimé Muyoboke Karimunda, ILPD’s Rector, also urged the students and the broader ILPD community to remain committed to the values imparted during the talk on heroism.
