Honorable Chief Justice, Dr. Faustin Ntezilyayo, urged lawyers in the Executive Mode to focus on professional values and ethics
On October 4, 2024, the Chief Justice of Rwanda, Dr. Faustin Ntezilyayo, addressed lawyers at the Kigali branch of the Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD). He emphasized the core values essential to their profession, including the promotion of professionalism, integrity, and fostering strong relationships with clients.
During his address, Dr. Ntezilyayo highlighted the pivotal role of ethics in promoting fair and inclusive justice. He underscored that these values are the foundation of true justice in Rwanda, stating, "Integrity and respect are crucial for building public trust in the justice system. Your role is not just to advocate for personal gain but to fight for truth and justice in the interest of the public good."
The Chief Justice further reiterated the importance of these ethical principles in restoring and maintaining public confidence in the justice sector. Lawyers were reminded that their ultimate responsibility is to pursue truth and justice, not only for their clients but also for the common good of society.
Additionally, lawyers were called upon to uphold fundamental professional values, such as client confidentiality, avoiding conflicts of interest, maintaining professionalism, independence, and transparency. They were encouraged to adhere to the rules and principles governing their work, commit to continuous learning and expertise, and collaborate with the broader justice system.
