Empowering legal professionals: 139 graduates expected to champion Justice in Rwanda
The ceremony underscores the pivotal role these graduates are poised to play as catalysts for positive change within Rwanda’s justice system.
The newly minted lawyers express a commitment to utilizing the acquired knowledge to enhance their proficiency in delivering justice to all Rwandans. Equipped with expertise from five specialized course programs namely: Criminal Process and Sentencing, Corporate and Insolvency Law Practice, Civil Procedure Practice, Contract and Tort Law Practice, and International Crimes and Genocide Ideology; these graduates have seamlessly integrated into various facets of the justice sector, assuming roles such as prosecutors, judges, court clerks, and legal researchers.
"We have gained invaluable knowledge that equips us to effectively resolve disputes arising from agreements, addressing a critical need within our legal landscape," remarked Richard Ndakaza, one of the graduates.
Dr. Aimé Muyoboke KARIMUNDA, the Rector of ILPD, emphasized the multifaceted contributions these specialized legal professionals will make to the judicial sector. He highlighted that while a judge with a Bachelor’s or higher degree possesses foundational knowledge, specialization provides an additional layer of expertise crucial for efficient case management.
"Specialization not only expedites case proceedings but also enhances the overall efficiency of the judicial process, ultimately reducing associated costs and bolstering citizens’ confidence in the judiciary," noted Dr. Muyoboke.
Acknowledging the intricate nature of contemporary challenges and the evolving landscape of conflicts globally, Hon Dr Faustin Nteziryayo, Chief Justice of Rwanda underscored the significance of these specialized courses in ensuring the delivery of quality justice.
He said, “There is no doubt that these programs are instrumental in shaping the future of legal practice in Rwanda. More particularly, the Judiciary of Rwanda has a steadfast vision of providing timely and quality justice to the people we serve.”
These professional training programs were developed by ILPD in collaboration with its principal stakeholders, including the Judiciary, in the framework of implementing the 20th resolution taken during the 14th Leadership retreat of February to March 2017 which directed ILPD to focus on teaching specialized courses.
