MAJ Staff Complete Training on ADR Policy to Enhance Conflict Resolution in Rwanda

On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, 38 staff members of Maison d'Accès à la Justice (MAJ) successfully completed a three-day training on “Law no 025/2021 of 12/05/2021 Amending Law No. 22/2018 of 29/04/2018” relating to the civil, commercial, labour and administrative procedure (CCLAP). This training aimed to equip them with the skills necessary to assist the Rwandan community in conflict resolution and to strengthen the capacities of Abunzi in the mediation process.
MAJ members expressed that gaining knowledge of ADR allows them to explore the roles of mediation, arbitration, and conciliation in contributing to peace building.
Jean Kabandana, the Coordinator of Nyabihu District, highlighted a key advantage of ADR: "In traditional courts, the relationship between the winner and loser is often contentious after the judgment. With ADR, defendants and accusers can resolve issues peacefully."
The training also introduced participants to conflict-sensitive and conflict-resolution strategies.
Pacifique Barihuta, Programme Manager of International Alert Rwanda, underscored the importance of integrating conflict sensitivity into MAJ's operations due to their close ties with the community.
"As we frequently change our work locations, conflict sensitivity skills will enable us to assess each new environment and find peaceful solutions tailored to its population," explained Angelique Bakayombe, MAJ Coordinator in Rwamagana District.
International Alert, through its Access to Justice Project in collaboration with MINIJUST, organized this training workshop for MAJ staff. The goal was not only to assist the Rwandan community in conflict resolution but also to empower the Abunzi's mediation process capabilities.
The training reflects a significant step towards promoting peace and reconciliation in Rwanda by enhancing the skills and knowledge of those directly involved in conflict resolution and community justice.
