Charting paths in legal expertise: ILPD's 17th evening program cohort commences studies

The 17th cohort, comprising 57 students enrolled in the night study program, boasts individuals who have completed legal courses across diverse law universities in Rwanda.

On December 1, 2023, the Kigali Branch hosted a reception for these students, outlining the guidelines they must adhere to for successful course completion and eventual professional accreditation as lawyers. Dr. Aimé Muyoboke Karimunda, the Rector of ILPD, emphasized the importance of diligence, encouraging the students to strive for excellence in their pursuit of a career in justice while cautioning against decision-making influenced by emotions.

Dr. Muyoboke expressed the institute's commitment to enhancing educational quality to provide lasting solutions to challenges across various sectors. He underscored the transformation of students with diverse legal backgrounds into proficient lawyers, stressing the institute's focus on not only what they learn but also their conduct post-learning.

The message reiterated the institute's determination to produce graduates capable of addressing the diverse needs of the workforce they enter upon completing their ILPD studies. Dr. Muyoboke identified a prevalent issue in institutions, the judiciary, prosecution, and the legal field, where graduates face rejection due to a misalignment between their knowledge and job responsibilities.

To ensure the preparedness of students, Dr. Muyoboke announced daily evaluations of attendance and research efforts. He encouraged students to delve into the understanding of laws, their origins, and their problem-solving efficacy. Additionally, he urged them to comprehend the gravity of their decisions, recognizing their impact on individuals and their communities.

Dr. Muyoboke emphasized that contemporary lawyers should not solely focus on civil or criminal litigation but should align with the evolving global landscape, seizing new opportunities through rigorous training.

ILPD graduates are equipped with qualifications enabling them to serve as judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and legal advisers. Established in 2008, ILPD initially provided short-term legal training to over 3000 individuals annually. The institute's current mission is to serve as a platform for legal professionals in Rwanda, the region, and Africa as a whole.
