ILPD Information 

The Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD) serves as a national and  regional centre of reference for:

1) practical legal training, and

2) research and development of the law,in three languages (English, French & Kinyarwanda). The three legal traditions (common law, civil law & African law) meet at the Institute.

The ILPD is community oriented, for instance through the ‘Maison d’Access à la Justice’, whose offices are located at the ILPD.

Module 8: Professional Practice - Prosecutors - Diploma in Legal Practice 

Content:

The practical module aims at giving a hands-on experience in the everyday practice of the work as a prosecutor. The module is to be held at the Parquet General. Topics to be dealt with are: Building a Team in the Prosecutor’s Office; Building a Team with the Police Officers; Searching, Building and Evaluating the evidence, Preparing the Witnesses; Specific Crimes such as economic and financial crimes, terrorism, money laundering, domestic violence etc.; Management - case flow, administrative, financial, human resources, etc.; Preparing the criminal trial; Forensic & new crime related technologies; Working with the Court system; Initiating procedures; Ethics.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

  • The theoretical background of working as a prosecutor, and how to translate this into everyday work;
  • Specific Crimes such as economic and financial crimes, terrorism, money laundering, domestic violence etc;
  • Forensic & new crime related technologies.
  • Ethics.

Cognitive/Intellectual skills/Application of Knowledge

  • Translate theoretical concepts into the everyday practice of working as a prosecutor, and
  • Find and apply theoretical concepts in solving practical problems.

Communication/ICT/Numeracy/Analytic Techniques/Practical Skills

  • Build a team in the Prosecutor’s Office;
  • Build a team with the Police Officers;
  • Search, build and evaluate the evidence;
  • Prepare the Witnesses
