ILPD Information 

The Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD) serves as a national and  regional centre of reference for:

1) practical legal training, and

2) research and development of the law,in three languages (English, French & Kinyarwanda). The three legal traditions (common law, civil law & African law) meet at the Institute.

The ILPD is community oriented, for instance through the ‘Maison d’Access à la Justice’, whose offices are located at the ILPD.

Module 6: Judging - Diploma in Legal Practice 

Content:

The trainees should be able to develop their abilities in solving questions of law and drafting a judgment in different languages. With the module, they will be able to draft judgment in lower or higher instance even if it comes to deal with a special judgment.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

  • List main tasks and activities of a judge in order to perform well;
  • List the facts and applicable rules to be assured in the presented cases;
  • Identify the necessary components of a judgement.

Cognitive/Intellectual skills/Application of Knowledge

  • Analyze and interpret the law and be sure that the law will be respected;
  • Draft a judgment in primary and intermediate courts, in the high court and supreme court and deal with special judgments;
  • Apply the Rwandese structure of judgment.

Communication/ICT/Numeracy/Analytic Techniques/Practical Skills

  • Use books, articles, internet in legal research to be informed continuously on legal developments;
  • Observe the rules of natural justice;
  • Verify that the facts brought by parties are reliable, valid and relevant.

General transferable skills

  • Act in an independent, neutral and impartial manner;
  • Supervise other judges and court staff.
