This module aims at enabling the trainees to develop their skills in negotiation and mediation in different languages (French, English, and Kinyarwanda). It includes the following courses: Established principles of negotiation and mediation, negotiating a contract, negotiating in a bankruptcy situation, negotiating labour contracts and agreements, negotiating international transactions, moot court. |

Learning Outcomes: |
Knowledge and Understanding
- Define the principles of arbitration, negotiation and mediation;
- Describe the importance of arbitration, negotiation and mediation in legal issues;
- Describe the different phases of arbitration, negotiation and mediation;
- Describe the importance of arbitration, negotiation and mediation in relation to the proceedings in ordinary tribunals in Rwanda.
Cognitive/Intellectual skills/Application of Knowledge
- Question parties effectively in order to analyze the intentions and interests of the parties in the process of negotiation or mediation;
- Know how and when to apply negotiation and mediation techniques.
Communication/ICT/Numeracy/Analytic Techniques/Practical Skills
- Explain clearly to clients the advantages of negotiation/mediation instead of pleading in court;
- Prepare the tactics to be used in negotiation and mediation;
- Involve adequately arbitration in negotiation and mediation process;
- Do internet research on successful negotiation and mediation cases and use this information in the development of tactics.
General transferable skills
- Negotiate and mediate effectively for the client;
- Act according to ethical practice as a negotiator/mediator.
