ILPD Information 

The Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD) serves as a national and  regional centre of reference for:

1) practical legal training, and

2) research and development of the law,in three languages (English, French & Kinyarwanda). The three legal traditions (common law, civil law & African law) meet at the Institute.

The ILPD is community oriented, for instance through the ‘Maison d’Access à la Justice’, whose offices are located at the ILPD.

Module 3: Legal Drafting - Diploma in Legal Practice 



Content:

This module aims at enabling the trainees to draft all legal documents in three languages (French, English, and Kinyarwanda). It includes the following courses: General principles of drafting, Agreements and contracts, Corporate documents, Court documents, Legislative drafting, Moot Court.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

  • Define principles of drafting a legal document;
  • Identify different elements of a law, a contract, a judgment and a corporate statute;
  • Illustrate the meaning of words or phrases in a law, a contract, a judgment and a corporate statute (statuts d’une societe ou d’une association).

Cognitive/Intellectual skills/Application of Knowledge

  • Differentiate a legal document from other documents;
  • Identify the intention of the author of legal document;
  • Attribute to each legal document its legal value and its legal implications;
  • Draft legal texts according to the standards learned, in one of the official languages, based on identification of issues related directly or indirectly to law;
  • Apply properly the use of “punctuation” in legal documents.

Communication/ICT/Numeracy/Analytic Techniques/Practical Skills

  • Formulate the right questions to understand possible litigations;
  • Draft according to both the parties’ interests and the legal context;
  • Draft legal texts with clarity.

General transferable skills

  • Draft legal texts with quality of expression;
  • Build a clear, sound and convincing argumentation, written and oral.
