ILPD Information 

The Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD) serves as a national and  regional centre of reference for:

1) practical legal training, and

2) research and development of the law,in three languages (English, French & Kinyarwanda). The three legal traditions (common law, civil law & African law) meet at the Institute.

The ILPD is community oriented, for instance through the ‘Maison d’Access à la Justice’, whose offices are located at the ILPD.

Module 2: Interviewing - Diploma in Legal Practice 



Content:

This module aims at enabling the trainees to be able to improve the abilities in adapting law to real facts presented to them by clients (beneficiaries) or witnesses in an everyday language. With the module, they will be able to master Criminal and civil Proceedings and lead themselves a legal clinic. This module consists of the following courses: General principles and theories of interviewing, Listening techniques, Interviewing techniques, Identifying the questions of law, Legal clinics, Following up the Interview, Prescription of Remedies, Moot Court.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

  • Describe general principles and theories of interviewing.

Cognitive/Intellectual skills/Application of Knowledge

  • Find the evidences and facts of the problem addressed to him or her by clients;
  • Translate gathered information on a problem into legal terminology;
  • Build up a sound and persuasive argumentation to render the best legal advice.

Communication/ ICT/ Numeracy/ Analytic Techniques/Practical Skills

  • Taking notes and sort information properly as a result of the interviews with client;
  • Set up proper case files of each client and persons interviewed, including basic information of these persons;
  • Do telephone calls properly and according to professional ethical and technical behaviour;
  • Use listening and interviewing techniques, suitable to the age, sexe, origin of the client / witnesses and let the client tell the story without delving in irrelevancies;
  • Seek legally supporting information such as availability of witnesses exhibits, expert, perjury;
  • Advise clients in order to remedy his/her problem in understandable language
  • Build up a sound and persuasive argumentation;
  • Organise and implement all juridical related activities in a legal clinic in a competent way.

General transferable skills

  • Receive clients, independently of age, sex, origin, with courtesy, patience and compassion;
  • Cooperate with colleagues and stakeholders of the presented cases;
  • Take initiatives in finding witnesses and evidences;
  • Apply the roles of either judge, clerk lawyer or prosecutor according to the duties and ethical behaviour of the profession.
